If you are going to crate train your puppy, feed and water him in the morning, then take him out before you leave in the morning. Allow him enough time to do his business. If that means you need to get up earlier, then do so. Its not your puppy’s responsibility get the job done in 5 minutes! Give him time! Place him back in the crate with water. Dogs usually do not soil their sleeping quarters, i.e. crates or sleeping area in the house. If you notice, they will seek out the farthest place to do that. Dobermans are very smart and clean animals. If they do happen to soil, their crate is too big. Place a cardboard box at the end to make the crate smaller, leave enough room to get up, turn and sit/sleep. Pick up all food and water after 5:00 PM until house breaking is complete. Provide water at meal times and a couple of times during the day – please remember the time of year, more water during dry hot days etc. This will provide the puppy with ample water consumption.
