About Us - Page 1

I would like to take this opportunity to give you a little insight as to who I am and why I breed.

My Background

My name is Kay Mevec.  I am originally from Iowa and grew up in a very typical farm community. I loved dogs, cats, horses my entire life and had a few of each.  My love for dogs grew over the years and eventually I delved into breeding Labradors.  That is where I gained my experience regarding genetic testing and OFA hips certification.

During my graduate work at Drake University, in Des Moines, Iowa, I met my husband while he was in law school.  His breed was the regal Doberman pinscher.  It was love at first sight…the Doberman breed that is!  From there it was completely Dobermans for me!

Today, I am a Director of Geriatric Education at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York.  My husband is a Judge and we own and operate three law firms in Syracuse and surrounding suburbs.  Although that is my “daytime” job, owning and breeding Dobermans has become my love and not so much my “hobby”. It has taken over my life, and if you ever had Dobermans, you would completely understand.  I take genetics and DNA testing very seriously and always strive to implement new health testing as we grow.

As you all know, we in New York have experienced the horrible tragedy of 911.  As a result, I have become involved in SAR (Search and Rescue) work with my dogs.  I am dedicated to SAR beliefs and techniques.  One of which is called “Imprinting”. We imprint all newborns to ensure a very sound, decision making puppy for families.  It is a procedure utilized in the police canine and SAR programs.  By stimulating or imprinting each pup from birth on, we develop the neuron connections much faster in the brain to create a pup/dog that can handle changes better and make better decisions in stressful situations. And if your family is anything like my family, we are running kids to soccer, lacrosse, dancing etc. and our dog comes with us.  After school activities are very stressful in our busy household and our dog feels it.  So I began implementing my SAR work with pet puppies as well as working pups.  After all, what better thing than to have a very sound, good decision-making pup that can handle changes in EACH family!  This along with DNA testing, pre-breed screens from Cornell Companion Animal Hospital, OFA Hip certification and soon to be added OFA Cardio, we feel we accomplish our mission to produce a very healthy, sound minded puppy for each family to enjoy!

I hope this small bit of information gave you a glimpse of who we are and our true devotion to this breed.  I must add, I have a very special “mentor” who is a professional breeder and show judge all over the East Coast.  She too has been instrumental in guiding me in making good choices for my breeding program.
